![]() This is an image of a collage/painting that was created in 1998 for the Greensboro Educational and Development Council (GEDC). It was to commemorate the organization's tenth year of operation. Within the past two years the organization disbanded. I have spoken with one of the previous directors regarding finding a home for this work of art. The commissioned work of art was created by myself and an artist/friend Alyssa Hinton. Contact Vandorn for Details |

This
work of art was created for Greensboro Educational and Development Council
in 1998. It commemorates the 10th anniversary of the organization. The
primary mission of this organization is to develop leaders for the minority
communities of Greensboro and to provide educational services for youth in
these communities. The two artists, Vandorn Hinnant and Alyssa Hinton were
commissioned to create this art.Beginning at the bottom of the picture plane you se two profiles of faces beneath the image of the NC map. These represent our ancestors who have gone before us and also signifies their ever present state as guardian spirits. On the NC map at the location of Greensboro there is the base/trunk of the tree. The
branches extend upward to a row of 10 faces that represent the 10 years of
the existence of GEDC and also the 200 plus graduates of the Leadership
Development Program administered by GEDC. In the lower half we see the
ground plane populated with images of people. To the left, a group of women
and a child. To the right an adult male and two youth. These images speak of
the educational and development programs for both youth and adults. In the
night sky behind the women is a hand that doubles as a tree branch/limb and
a hand (suggesting “mother night”, also signified by the crescent moon).
Behind the man and youth is the Sun (“father day”). The sets of concentric
circles emanating from the “all seeing eye” of the elder spirit (earth) and
the sun are statements about light and sound; the twin aspects of the
creator. |
